Working Principle
Pyridaben is a pyrazolyl insecticide and acaricide. It has a very strong contact-killing effect but has no fumigant, systemic, or translocation activity. It mainly works by inhibiting the synthesis of glutamate dehydrogenase in the muscle and nerve tissues and the electron transport system in chromosome I, thereby killing insects and mites.
Pest Control Spectrum and Usage
Pyridaben is a heterocyclic, low-toxicity insecticide and acaricide with a broad spectrum against mites. It has strong contact-killing activity but no systemic, translocation, or fumigant effects. It is effective against all phytophagous mites, such as spider mites, eriophyid mites, gall mites, and tarsonemid mites. It also works at different stages of the mite life cycle, including eggs, nymphs, adults, and mobile adults.
In China, it is mainly used on citrus, apples, pears, hawthorns, and other fruit crops. It can also be used on vegetables (except eggplants), tobacco, tea, cotton, and ornamental plants. Pyridaben is widely applied for controlling pests and mites in fruit trees. However, its use should be controlled in tea gardens intended for export.
It can be applied whenever mites occur (for better results, it is recommended to use when there are 2–3 mites per leaf on average). Prepare a 20% wettable powder or 15% emulsifiable concentrate, diluted with water to 50–70 mg/L (about 2300–3000 times), and spray. The safety interval is 15 days, meaning stop application 15 days before harvest. However, literature shows that the actual effective period can exceed 30 days.
Precautions
1. Toxic to humans and animals. Do not swallow, inhale, or let it penetrate the skin. Avoid contact with eyes or contamination of clothing. Wear protective gear when applying and wash hands, face, etc., thoroughly with soap and water afterward. If it comes in contact with skin, remove clothing and rinse with soapy water; if it gets in the eyes, rinse with water. In case of inhalation poisoning, move to fresh air, loosen clothing for easier breathing, and go to a hospital if necessary. If swallowed by mistake, rinse the mouth thoroughly with water or drink two glasses of water and induce vomiting with a finger.
2. Store in a cool, dry, and ventilated place, away from food.
3. Do not contaminate wells, ponds, or water sources. Keep humans and animals out of sprayed areas immediately after application.
4. Using during flowering can be harmful to bees.
5. Can be mixed with most insecticides and fungicides, but should not be mixed with strong alkaline agents like lime sulfur or Bordeaux mixture.
6. Use no more than twice a year, with a safety interval of 3 days before harvest.
