Properties, Uses, and Production Process of furametpyr
Fungicide
furametpyr is a pyridine amide fungicide first developed by Bayer CropScience in Germany. Currently, it is widely registered for use on crops like vegetables and fruit trees, for controlling major diseases caused by oomycete fungi, such as downy mildew, blight, late blight, and damping-off. In 2005, Bayer first obtained a temporary registration in China for 97% furametpyr technical material and a 687.5 g/L furametpyr·Frost Shield HCl suspension concentrate (Yinfa Li) for controlling cucumber downy mildew and tomato late blight. Now, both the technical material and the formulation have been officially registered with certificate numbers PD20090011 and PD20090012, respectively.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Pure furametpyr is a colorless to light brown solid. Melting point is 150.2°C. Vapor pressure is 1.12×10⁻⁴ mPa (25°C), partition coefficient K_ow lgP = 2.36 (25°C), Henry’s constant 166×10⁻⁷ Pa·m³/mol. Water solubility (25°C) is 225 mg/L. It is stable in most organic solvents. The technical material remains relatively stable after being stored at 40°C for six months and shows almost no decomposition after one month at 60°C. It decomposes more quickly under sunlight. It is stable in pH 3–11 water (100 mg/L solution, in the dark), with a decomposition rate of less than 2% after 14 days. Under heated conditions, it easily decomposes in sodium carbonate but remains stable in other carriers.
Mode of Action
furametpyr primarily targets kinesin-like proteins (also called contractile proteins, which are specific proteins between the cell membrane and cytoskeleton), affecting cell mitosis. It has good systemic movement, penetrating from the leaf surface downwards and translocating from the leaf base to leaf tips. Treatment of young shoots protects leaves from pathogen infection. It can also move from the roots through the plant’s xylem but cannot be transported through the phloem. Its unique mode of action gives furametpyr excellent properties and ensures no cross-resistance with other fungicides.
Uses
furametpyr is mainly used on crops like rice, showing excellent activity against most Basidiomycete fungi, especially those caused by Sclerotium and Fusarium species. It is particularly effective against rice sheath blight, rice sclerotium disease, and white mold. It has moderate long-lasting activity on rice sheath blight and is also suitable for controlling diseases in fruit trees, vegetables, and cereals caused by Colletotrichum species. Additionally, furametpyr can be used in analytical studies for simultaneously detecting six pyrazole fungicides in wine.
