Mechanism of Action
Propamocarb mainly inhibits the biosynthesis of phospholipids and fatty acids in pathogen cell membranes, preventing hyphal growth, sporangium formation, and germination. It is a systemic fungicide with internal transport. When used as a soil treatment, it is quickly absorbed by roots and transported throughout the plant. When applied to stems and leaves, it is rapidly absorbed and distributed within the leaves, providing protection within 30 minutes. It can also be used in soilless cultivation, soaking tubers and bulbs, and making seed coatings. Since its mechanism differs from other fungicides, it doesn’t cross-react, making it effective against pathogens resistant to commonly used fungicides.
Chemical Properties
The pure product is a white crystalline substance, hygroscopic, with a faint aromatic odor. The technical material has a melting point of 45–55°C and a vapor pressure of 8×10^-9 Pa (25°C). Its hydrochloride salt is stable only in acidic media, and its solubility at 25°C is: methanol >500 g/L, isopropanol >300 g/L, dichloromethane >430 g/L, toluene <0.1 g/L, hexane <0.1 g/L, ethyl acetate 23 g/L, water 867 g/L. It is light-stable, stable at room temperature, but corrosive to metals.
Uses
It’s a systemic fungicide suitable for foliar, soil, and seed treatments. Effective against oomycete fungi such as Saprolegnia, Pythium, Peronospora, Phytophthora, Pseudoperonospora, and Rhizopus. It also promotes plant growth. For soil treatment, use 72.2% water solution at 400–600x dilution to irrigate; for foliar treatment, use 600–1000x dilution before disease outbreaks and spray every 7–10 days.
Additional Uses
It is a highly effective, broad-spectrum, and safe carbamate fungicide.
It has excellent local systemic activity and can be used for foliar, soil, and seed treatment to control various crop diseases caused by oomycetes.
